Here’s What People Are Saying About CBD: 13 CBD Success Stories

What do you do when you want to try a new product?

If you’re like me, you pull out your smartphone or hop onto your computer and immediately start Googling.

Maybe you sift through some scientific studies, read a few product reviews, or ask your family and friends about their experiences.

To help you make an informed choice, we’ve conveniently compiled and categorized CBD research and real reviews from CBD users.

According to CBD web resource CBD Oil Users poll of 176,600+ members in their CBD Oil Users Facebook Group, these are the top 5 most popular reasons people use CBD products:

  • Chronic Pain—including back pain, migraines, joint and nerve pain
  • Anxiety—including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, phobias and panic disorder
  • Inflammation—including acute and chronic inflammation
  • Insomnia—including difficulty falling and staying asleep
  • Arthritis—including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis

We’ll examine each of these categories in greater depth, as well as a few other health benefits that arose from reviews, such as how CBD helped many users take less medication.

Hear how CBD changed the lives of people with various health conditions in their own words, as well as the science behind why CBD works, with these 13 CBD success stories.

It’s Relieving Their Chronic Pain

CBD utilizes the endocannabinoid system (ECS)to deliver its therapeutic effects. Discovered in the 90’s, the ECS is a body-wide signaling system tasked with keeping the body in balance, or in “homeostasis.” The ECS regulates many functions, including mood, sleep, and pain sensation.

Topical products like lotions and ointments can provide targeted relief to specific areas of pain, such as sore joints or an achy back. Topicals gain access to the ECS through a high concentration of cannabinoid receptors in the skin.

“Reliable topical CBD products don’t just mask pain or inflammation as some over-the-counter topical pain relief creams do. They actually can make the pain go away for a certain time period,” according to Dr. Matthew Halpert, an immunology professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Speak to your doctor to see if CBD may be a viable treatment option for managing your chronic pain, so you can get back to doing what matters most.

Antje’s Story: CBD Helped Me Avoid an Operation

Antje, an avid archery enthusiast, worried her “tennis elbow” (lateral epicondylitis) would require surgery for her to get back to doing what she loved. After reading online that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, she gave it a try:

I ordered the 500mg oil and started the next day with 3 to 4 drops under my tongue. The effect exceeded all my hopes. Since the first ingestion, my pain became much better. Now, after about 4 weeks, I am completely pain-free. I have resumed the archery training to the full extent and of course, the operation has been canceled. I also sleep soundly which I haven't been able to do for years.”

Eisi’s Story: CBD Improved My Quality of Life

After 12 years, Eisi was unsure if anything could ever dull her chronic pain and rheumatic discomfort. Before CBD, she took 30mg of morphine twice daily, as well as a mood-lightening medication due to permanent pain in her hands and joints. Not only did CBD make her pain bearable, it also improved her sleep and helped her to limit her medication use:

“Then I tried CBD oil. In the beginning, I took 6 drops of 1500mg oil in the morning and 6 drops in the afternoon, 6 drops of 2000mg oil in the evening. Within two days I already noticed considerable improvements: after years I could finally sleep through! Also, the pain became more bearable and meanwhile I only take 20mg of morphine once a day. Currently, I take 5 drops of 1500mg oil in the morning and 5 drops of 2000mg oil in the evening. I would never have thought that I could ever again be almost pain-free and lead a normal life. My quality of life has improved exorbitantly!”

It’s Calming Their Anxiety

The anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects of CBD may provide necessary relief for those who suffer from various anxiety and anxiety-related disorders and panic attacks.

A 2015 comprehensive review of studies “found that existing preclinical evidence strongly supports CBD as a treatment” for several anxiety and anxiety-related disorders, including:

  • generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • panic disorder (PD)
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • social anxiety disorder (SAD)
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Furthermore, a large case series conducted in a Colorado outpatient facility reported anxiety scores decreased in 79.2% of patients when taking a low dose of 25mg of CBD each morning.

Nadine’s Story: CBD for Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Nadine’s anxiety disorder sometimes felt so severe that she couldn’t leave the house. Simple tasks like shopping could overwhelm her and send her into a panic attack. After tablets prescribed by her doctor made her gain weight, she discontinued use, and the panic attacks returned.

Then, a friend recommended she try CBD oil. Within months, she no longer needed tablets, and reports CBD leavers her feeling “motivated, well-rested and well-balanced.”

Julia’s Story: CBD for PTSD-Related Anxiety and Panic Attacks

After a traumatic cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) diagnosis and hospitalization, Julia began feeling extreme anxiety while driving to work.

“I couldn’t believe that fear was limiting my life so much,” she recalls in a review published in CBD magazine Hemppedia.

Her condition limited the medications doctors could prescribe to her due to dangerous side effects, so she began researching CBD as a form of alternative relief. Since taking CBD, Julia has been able to conquer her commute to work, and take back control of her life:

“I am still nervous but the panic doesn't come anymore . I’m waiting for the usual symptoms to go off but… nothing! I could have started crying with happiness when I noticed the effect already after a few days!”

Julia takes 3 drops of 500mg CBD oil a day to manage her symptoms, and takes extra drops as needed when feeling the onset of a panic attack.

It’s Soothing Their Inflammatory Conditions

It’s no surprise many users of CBD have noticed improvements in their skin. CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory that can calm inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Additionally, CBD may prevent acne by stopping the overproduction of sebum, an oily substance that can clog pores by trapping in dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells.

In a 2019 clinical trial, applying a CBD ointment twice daily over three months resulted in “significantly improved skin parameters,” specifically:

  • Hydration
  • Trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), which can pronounce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Elasticity
  • Appearance of scars

The anti-inflammatory powers of CBD may also extend into other inflammatory-related conditions, such as Crohn’s disease.

Joe’s Story: CBD Calmed My Dermatitis and Eczema

Meet Joe, whose severe dermatitis and eczema left his scalp painfully inflamed, itchy, and flaky. He tried numerous specialized shampoos and steroid creams in search of relief. After taking CBD three times daily, his symptoms began to subside:

“The itching was the first symptom to go away, probably after 3 or 4 days. My skin was still red, but I didn’t have the constant need to scratch my head. Two weeks later, my skin was visibly less inflamed . On week 4, there was no sign of inflammation . I am glad I used CBD because it has not shown any side-effects unlike the products I used before and I would recommend it to others with similar conditions.”

Aksel’s Story: CBD Cleared My Acne

Another user, Aksel, documented her CBD acne journey, noting “I have been taking CBD oil under my tongue for two months and my acne has almost completely subsided.”

Sandra’s Story: CBD Is a "Must" for Crohn’s Disease

Sandra suffers from Crohn’s disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can cause her abdominal pain, nausea, fatigue, and other undesirable symptoms. Her immunosuppressive medication left her feeling weak and sick, without solving the problem.

“Then last year in November I was made aware of CBD. I informed myself about it and started with 500mg oil with 2x2 drops daily. After only two months I went again to have my blood test and I was astonished - all my values were in the norm and physically I also felt very fit and more active again . [...] So I went to the doctor and had a colonoscopy written down, which in the end looked as if I had never had Crohn’s disease .”

In her testimonial published in Hemppedia, Sandra reveals: “My intestine was like new, the doctor said. [...] In short, I live like a healthy person again. I can’t live without the oil now! I take 2 drops only in the evening because it also helps me sleep through the night. CBD oil is an absolute must in every house. It has helped me a lot and is still doing it and I hope that other people feel the same way as I do.”

It’s Improving Their Quality of Life Living with Arthritis

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints that may worsen over time. As an anti-inflammatory that may also reduce pain sensation, CBD is gaining recognition in the medical world as a treatment for symptoms of arthritis.

The Arthritis Foundation conducted a recent survey of over 2,600 patients with different forms of arthritis (52% osteoarthritis, 45% rheumatoid arthritis) and their experience with CBD. While most patients primarily used CBD oil to reduce pain associated with arthritis, the results of the survey proved the benefits of CBD extended into other areas of their lives as well:

  • 67% report improvements in their physical function
  • Over 30% say it provides relief from morning stiffness and helps them get moving
  • Three-fourths report improvements in their ability to sleep
  • Over 30% say it helped relieve symptoms of fatigue
  • Relieving symptoms of anxiety was reported by 77% of those currently using CBD
  • 67% report effectiveness in improving depressed mood

It’s Their Secret to a Good Night’s Sleep

By interacting with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a large role in the sleep-wake cycle, CBD may be the key to improving your sleep quantity and quality.

“Many patients report that they are able to sleep better when taking CBD,” says Dr. Wendy Twohey, DC, an accomplished chiropractor with over 20 years of experience, who notes “sleep can help the body recuperate from injury.”

In 2019, a large case series revealed patients can improve their sleep scores by taking as low a dose of CBD as 25mg before bedtime. Additionally, CBD may address underlying issues preventing successful sleep, such as pain, anxiety, or PTSD-related nightmares.

In a 2019 retrospective case series , not only did CBD reduce symptoms in adults with PTSD, “CBD also appeared to offer relief in a subset of patients who reported frequent nightmares as a symptom of their PTSD.”

Carmen’s Story: CBD Helps Me Sleep Through the Night Again

After 3 years of sleepless nights due to painful psoriatic arthritis, Carmen Martinez felt depressed and fatigued. She recalls her state of mind before CBD to arthritis resource CreakyJoints: “I was barely making it through my day, I had no energy. It made me very depressed and unhappy to the point where my family was very worried about me.”

However, after taking CBD oil from a tincture sublingually (under her tongue) twice daily, she began to see results: “I noticed a difference after the second dose. It wasn’t huge but it was there. I just felt calmer and there was less pain.”

In consultation with her doctor, Carmen increased her dosage to 15mg of CBD in the morning and in the evening before bedtime.

“The results have been beyond what I dreamed. I can sleep eight hours at night and I’m not feeling depressed anymore . For years I felt like there was no light at the end of the tunnel and now I have hope. I never thought I’d be able to say that.”

Miriam’s Story: CBD Stopped My Nightmares

Miriam, who also applies CBD oil as a night cream to clear her acne, found relief from her nightmares by taking CBD oil before going to sleep:

“Since the first use, I have been thrilled. I can sleep so much better and sleep so soundly that I can’t sleep without CBD oil anymore. I struggled with nightmares and strange dreams a lot, and since I started using CBD, I don’t have any anymore.”

It’s Relieving Their Symptoms from Neurological Disorders

Researchers are continuing to explore the therapeutic potential of CBD in regards to neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS) with promising results.

Currently, Sativex, an oral spray delivering THC and CBD in a 1:1 ratio, is available to MS patients in Europe for symptom management. The drug is still awaiting official approval from the FDA in the United States. In June of 2018, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a CBD prescription medication, to treat epilepsy-related seizures in children.

Additionally, there is research to support the use of CBD for psychosis, anxiety and tremors associated with Parkinson’s disease, and as a tool to improve Parkinson’s patient’s overall quality of life.

Sabine’s Story: CBD Improved My MS-Impaired Vision

When Sabine’s multiple sclerosis relapsed, her right eye became significantly visually impaired, leaving her residual vision to only 10%. She tried cortisone therapy, which brought “only massive side effects, but no success.”

“The alternative medicine doctor I visited then treated me with 3 x 3 drops of CBD oil 1500mg and after only 10 days the vision of this eye improved to 60%! Amazing progress and success! [...] Every day I am grateful for my improved vision thanks to CBD oil.”

David’s Story: CBD Oil Has Given Me My Life Back

“I decided to try CBD Oil to treat my MS symptoms of Headaches, Fatigue, Spasms, and Insomnia,” shares David McBride to the CBD Oil Users CBD success story thread.

“Since then, I have quit taking all of my various prescription medications except my daily MS medication. I feel the best I have felt in a long time and have lots of new found energy. CBD oil has given me my life back!”

It’s Helping Them Wean Off Other Medications

CBD may be a safe and effective alternative to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like ibuprofen, and opioid pain medication such as morphine and codeine.

Dr. Twohey reflects on her initial gravitation toward CBD in an interview with Chiropractic Economics :

“I became more comfortable suggesting CBD oil to patients after I met an orthopedist from Indiana who had been able to safely help about half of his patients come off of opioid medication. That got my attention.”

In a 2018 report, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared CBD is safe to use, and poses no addiction or overdose potential. In fact, CBD is being explored as a new tool for addiction management.

Iris’s Story: CBD Made Other Pain Drugs “Redundant”

Iris, who suffers from chronic migraines, ADHD, joint pain and tendonitis, revealed how CBD compared to the traditional medications she had been prescribed by doctors in the past:

“CBD oil provided me with relief and made the drugs ibuprofen, sumatriptan, opipramol and even stronger drugs redundant. I am much calmer, less irritated and rarely feel much pain. I take 20% drops throughout the day and can only warmly recommend it to anyone with such diseases and impairments.”

Sabine’s Story: CBD Helps Me Take Less Medication

After several operations, and with her history of chronic pain, asthma, and fibromyalgia, Sabine’s doctor recommended she take CBD oil to manage her symptoms:

“I’ve been taking painkillers for years and have been asked by my doctor if I would like to test CBD oil. After researching on the internet and taking it for the first time, I had fewer complaints the next day. I can say that I take less medication because of the oil as I get along very well with the drops.”

The Takeaway

The anecdotal evidence in support of CBD is too large to be ignored.

The powerful compound cannabidiol has the capability to drastically improve the quality of life of those who suffer from a variety of health conditions.

By interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system, CBD is able to influence important functions, such as sleep and pain sensation.

As an anti-inflammatory, CBD has the therapeutic potential to treat inflammatory conditions like acne, eczema, Crohn’s disease, and arthritis.

Additionally, the anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects of CBD are continually being explored by researchers as a treatment tool for anxiety, anxiety-related disorders, and depression.

Existing research suggests CBD may be a valuable asset for symptom management in patients with neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease.

For many, CBD may be a safe and effective alternative to their pain and opioid medications without harsh side effects, and may allow them to wean off of their existing medications.

As we wait for more research, the social proof of CBD’s efficacy is evident in the many existing testimonials and reviews from its users.
